Apple juggernaut sends ripples through tech world - via AP

Associated Press definetly tells the story better than I did in my last post ;) NEW YORK (AP) — Consumer technology companies reporting financial results this week are looking like rowboats bobbing in the wake of Apple Inc.'s supertanker. Close to oblivion in 1997, Apple is now the world's second-most valuable company, after Exxon Mobil Corp. On April 20, it reported net income of $5.99 billion for the January-to-March period, nearly double that of a year ago. It shipped a record 18.65 million iPhones during the quarter. Its iPad tablet computers are so popular, the company couldn't make enough. And then AP describes the following competitors: — Microsoft Corp.: loser. — Nokia Corp.: loser. — Research In Motion Ltd.: loser.

Samsung, RIM, LG, Acer and Microsoft falls on Wall Street - Apple is rising

Do we see some sign that $APPL are beating the rest, also on the Wall Street?  In the Q1 declaration we've seen that Samsung, RIM, LG, Acer and Microsoft have delivered less than analyst expected. Apple however, bet the analysts again.  Last week it was reported that iPhone growth was 115% and the market only 20%.

The survey of 1,018 men found that 88 percent of men said they “loved” their smartphone, with half of men saying they were actually addicted to their handset. Eight out of ten said smartphones made their lives better, making them more confident (73 percent) and making them feel smarter (68 percent). Why Can’t Anyone Make A Popular Tablet?

It's about manufacturing -  A post from TechCrunch by John Biggs  does a good job explaining the endless flops of altenate tablets coming out: In terms of manufacturing, the age of tablets is different from the age of netbooks mostly because there is no way to make a cheap tablet. You only have a certain, finite amount of space inside a small tablet case and, more important, tablet PC parts are expensive and often custom-built. Touchscreens are expensive because mother-glass manufacturers see Apple buying up their stock and they hope to make a killing. Flash memory is expensive because, well, Apple bought it all. And the tablets themselves are expensive because Apple set the prices.  And he finish: Although I’m reticent to call this a “post PC” world, I think this is a bit more than a fad, though, and it seems that Apple is so far ahead in terms of sales, popularity, and usability that everyone else is, in a word, flummoxed. They just can’t fit a tablet into a global supply chain

Don't forget the people of Bahrain. They are still fighting for a decent life with their blood!

In Bahrain, the conflict seems to go from bad to worse, when the PM har ordered death penality on demonstrators. I'm told that this is about the Prime Minister, vying for power over the King and Crown Prince. And that the Shiite Majority in Bahrain respect the King & hold on to hope that the Crown Prince will gain strength to over come the manipulation of the the PM. He has been in charge for 42 years. I'm also told that the people want to be represented and be heard. There protests are economic, about housing, health, education, equality and the chance of a decent job. This is what they have been protesting for, not to over throw the the Govt. The moderates from both communities were uniting (Sunni & Shia), when the "thugs" started causing trouble. This reminds me on Egypt, when Mubarak let prisoner loose to attack demonstrators. This is extremly bad actions, that will make reconciliations even more difficult after the conflict ends. Seems to me that

From Windwos to the iPad - is it possible to do the jump?

From Windows to iPad – is it possible to do the jump? by mortjac April 29, 2011 How can you switch from a tool so ripe and extensive as the Windows platform something so barebone as iPad? Well, in order to do it, I first had to accept some principles:    I will renounce on functionality    I will not try to do everything on iPad    I will try to do things I didn’t do before, for instance music, video, podcast. The last point is very important. I need some positive feedback to keep myself motivated. And motivation is the clue, because it hurts to make the chance. It’s painful not to do it the way I did before, very painful! It became very clear what I couldn’t do on iPad:   SQL Database Manager to manage our GL21 in Microsoft Azure    MS Excel, which I use in budgeting and statistics. The pivot table function that I depend on, I haven’t found in any iPad app yet. Tell me if you know any! So I keep my Windows and Mac laptops. And continue traveling with my Mac still some ti

2011 iPhone Sales: > 100 million according to Matt Richman

I like his analysis! On average, Q2 iPhone sales have been 16.6% higher than Q1 sales, Q3 iPhone sales have been 75.44% higher than Q1 sales, and Q4 iPhone sales have been 107.575% higher than Q1 sales. If we apply those numbers to the 18.65 million iPhones Apple sold in Q1 2011, we get 21.75 million iPhones, 32.72 million iPhones, and 38.71 million iPhones in Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. Adding those numbers together gives us a total of 111.83 million iPhones .

Apple on location data: they don't collect anything

Apple are meeting the criticism of their caching of WiFi and mobile tower locations. Here is their answer, which should be quite calming: CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apple would like to respond to the questions we have recently received about the gathering and use of location information by our devices. 1. Why is Apple tracking the location of my iPhone? Apple is not tracking the location of your iPhone. Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so.

Why speed matters

Speed has two sides, speed of development and the speed of the app. And the bad thing is that speedy apps take long time to develope. We're currently trying to get new and speedier apps to the market, but we must wait with speeding up some parts, since that will too long. I found the article Why speed matters  from O'Reilly Radar by Joshua-Michéle Ross, quite utile to motivate my team. Here are some highlights: Speed is our default setting Human beings live and operate in a constant state of now; we process extraordinary volumes of information in real time. The acceleration of technology is simply an effort to catch up to our zero-latency experience of being. Whenever given a choice, we will opt for a service that delivers response times as fast as our own nervous system. Then Joshua-Michéle Ross discuss each of these points: Speed is money saved Speed is gratification delivered Speed is loyalty earned Speed equals certainty, delay equals doubt Speed is a key facet of busin

Update: Everyone are tracking you. It's not just Apple and Google that keep tracks of your movements.

First it was revealed that Apple kept a log on your iPhone, and submitted it to Apple dayli. Then it was revealed that Google did the same with the Android phones, just not storing it locally. And finally  Got Windows Phone 7? Microsoft's Tracking You Too  showed that Microsoft did something similar. My understanding is that all this collection of data are needed to make your phone work better. So I don't worry. And you shouldn't either. Update: And there are more. Mobile: How hooked are we? 39% use it on the bathroom, 20% would drop cable TV if necessary, Google survey tells.

In a post from TechCrunch by Leena Rao called Google Survey: 39 Percent Of Smartphone Owners Use Their Devices In The Bathroom , there is a lot of interesting statistics putting numbers to what we already knows: ...93% of smartphone users use their phones at home; 81% browse the Internet and 77% search on their phones, 72% of smartphone users use their phones while consuming other media. One-third of smartphone owners use their phones while watching TV. And 45% of smartphone consumers use their phones to help them to manage and plan activities, such as for dinner plans, travel arrangements and finances. Google says that 39% admit to having used their smarpthone while going to the bathroom and one in five users would give up their Cable TV in order to keep using their smartphones.

Re-think the four hardware buttons on Android

If Android removes the “back”, “menu” and “search” buttons and put the “home” button a little far away from the touch screen, it becomes to look like something that already existed more than four years ago . Is that why Android invented these four hardware buttons?

There is no humanity here anymore.

As I sit at this airport in Paris, writing this piece, watching people come and go, I am haunted by two thoughts: The first is a question I cannot answer. How can you shoot people like that? Just watch a crowd march towards you; sit in a firing position, wait ... watch; then fire directly into a crowd of civilians. I did not see a single shot fired from the crowd in the few minutes we sat there watching people flail without any place to hide – a gut wrenching pink mist spraying strait in the air. It is that thought, and the words of a young man from the southern city of Deraa speaking about the country he once loved, a country that has forever changed asking me rhetorically: "What do we have? There is no humanity here anymore." By Cal Perry from Aljazeera.net blog at http://blogs.aljazeera.net/middle-east/2011/04/24/there-no-humanity-here-0

Bilde
Her er to eksempler: Torsk. I Oslo forlangte Georg A. Nilsen - sjømat, vilt og delikatesse i Bogstadveien 196,- for kiloen. Jordbær. Hos Carrefour i Finestrat kostet jordbærene ned i 1,15 euro for kiloen i April. Dvs kr 4,50 for kurven.

App Search Engine for Users and Developers

Just read a post by VentureBeat stating that Quixey, a new startup, is offering a multi-platform search engine that will make life easier for both end users and developers. Here's a part of the story: Quixey , a new startup that’s developing a search engine dedicated to mobile apps, announced today that it will also make life easier for developers by giving them an easy way to manage their apps across multiple stores. Such a feature would be a boon to developers, since they can manage messaging for theirs apps in one location instead of having to visit each app store one at a time. Additionally, Quixey’s App Developer accounts will allow devs to see what users are saying about their apps in one location. The company says it has received “extremely positive feedback” from developers who’ve been testing out the accounts. Quixey’s search technology will also scrape the web to find all available versions of apps, which will remind developers of the platforms they haven’t yet hit,

What makes apps delightful? - by @om

Om Malik has written another great post on what makes a great app. Om tells about a favourite shop, and connect this experoence to the apps world. He sums up: There are few ways an app can work toward a better experience. It all starts with overcoming three major constraints with today’s mobile and smartphone experience: Network speeds, despite all the talk from carriers are limited and thus not conducive to heavy download activity. Limited screen real estate, which puts premium on every pixel. Finite number of mobile gestures (that don’t involve using the keyboard.) He goes through why fast is better, why size matters and why Facebook login is so important. Om Malik posts excites me. They excites me so much that I've been paying for his Pro service for some months. I must try to meet that guy when I'm in SF...

River of News derimot funket. Så nyhetene ble sortert. 3.
