Depression - Caused by Inflammation, Thus Like Other Diseases of Civilization

It seems like you can earn an decent depression simply buy eating a lot of vegetable oils (Omega 6) and dropping fish oils (Omega 3). Deans keep on: ...then you add a lot of grains or legumes with lectins and immunoreactive proteins, and top it off lots of modern chronic stress . Do this for a long period of time, and your body gets irritated - obesity, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune diseases are all related to inflammation. Turns out your brain can get pretty irritated too. Dean explains how inflammation are connected to depression, and which can be fueled buy bad eating habits. Very interesting. A post from Psycology today by Emily Deans, M.D. has the whole story . Here is a part: It is well known that symptoms of clinical depression are likely mediated by inflammation in the brain. A number of lines of evidence support this idea, including that depressed people, old and young, have elevated levels of certain inflammatory proteins in the plasma and cerebrospinal flui...

Back From Betrayal - An Airtight Formula

I've a lot of good friends being thrown out of the homes, or more exacty, who have thrown themself out... Some of the have a very bad life afterwards. And a life in powerty, bad health and bad end of life awaits many. And of course, there is betrayal in their history. Happily I still are still in my house, but as I see so many brilliant people experiencing this, there lingers a fright inside me. I'm anxious that I one day will lose my mind and betray everyone I love... Then it is good to read something like this post  from Psycology today by Mark Goulston, M.D., F.A.P.A . which gives you the means to get a change to come back to your partner after six hard months. Here is a part: There is a road back, but it takes practicing the 4 R's to respond to the 4 H's you triggered in the other person by betraying their trust.  The 4 H's and the 4 R's:   1. To ease the  HURT  you need to demonstrate  REMORSE  to show that you know you damaged somethin...

Thinking Like Einstein, who asked, "What would it be like to ride light?"

Bilde
Analytic meditation - I like these words. And even more when it comes from Dalai Lama and tells a story about Einstein! A post from Psycology today by Arthur Zajonc has the whole story . Here is a part: For perhaps the hundredth time, I try to think like Einstein. A burst of light is seen by two observers: one stationary on a platform, the other moving in a train. Assume the speed of light is the same for both observers. That's it, that's all you need to change forever our understanding of space, time, matter, and the universe. No Large Hadron Collider, no CERN, no Hubble Space Telescope, no footnotes, no academic appointment, just the clear light of one mind, and a friend or two to talk with while walking the Berner Oberland breathing in the pristine mountain air. How did he do it? How could Einstein think so clearly, so faithfully, when everyone else held fast to habits of mind that seemed so sensible and yet were ultimately so wrong.       We think of...

Facebook Enhances Self-Esteem, Study Finds

Bilde
And if you need even stronger self-esteem, try to view your @mentions in Flipboard on Apple iPad. That rocks! A post from Psycology today by Adoree Durayappah, MAPP has the whole story . Here is a part: Feeling down in the dumps and want to feel better? Log into  Facebook  and view your profile. Want to feel  even  better? Try editing your profile. A new study published in the February issue of  Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking  found that viewing and editing your Facebook profile could boost your self-esteem . Remember the skit "Daily Affirmation With Stuart Smalley" on "Saturday Night Live"? Smalley -- with his well-coiffed blond hair and smart, pastel cardigan -- would begin his televised  self-help  show by gazing into the mirror and reciting, "I'm good enough I'm smart enough. And doggone it, people like me!" Oh, poor Stuart. If he only had a Facebook profile back then -- it would have been so much easier to boost his se...

What Are Dogs Trying to Say When They Bark?

Bilde
I don't understand dogs, I like them but am normally afraid of them. This article gave me a hope that I in the future could understand them a bit better... A post from Psycology today by Stanley Coren, Ph.D., F.R.S.C. has the whole story . Here is the last part: Let's consider the interpretation of the most common barks. Rapid strings of 2 to 4 barks with pauses between is the most common form of barking and is the classic alarm bark meaning something like "Call the pack. There is something going on that should be looked into." Barking in a fairly continuous string but lower pitch and slower than the usual alarm bark suggests that the dog is sensing an imminent problem. Thus this sound means "The intruder (or danger) is very close. I don't think that he is friendly. Get ready to defend yourself!" One or two sharp short barks of high or midrange pitch is the most typical greeting sound, and it usually replaces the alarm barks when the visitor is...

Screen Reading Before Bed Still Bad for Sleep, and We All Still Do It #insomnia

Bilde
Oh no! I like to take a look at the last news and apps statistics before going to sleep. Sometimes, with the iPhone, I feel like a boy again. Always doing inappropriate actions, and my parents teaching me. Now however, I read it in my RSS reader. And that's hurt as much. A post from Lifehacker by Kevin Purdy has the whole story . Here is a part: We've known  for years  that viewing electronics before bed disturbs or prevents sleep. But the National Sleep Foundation finds that 95 percent of people are staring at screens—and two-thirds don't get enough sleep during the week. As a helpful reminder, it's not just a motherly nag about "getting ready for bed" that makes screens before bed, or especially  in  bed, quite a bad idea. That may be part of it, as having a day-in, day-out routine helps your brain know when it should shift its activity toward rest. But that blue-ish light has a direct effect on your brain chemistry: Charles Czeisler, of Harvard Medica...

Do women’s pheromones trigger economic riskiness in men?

Bilde
Science knows a lot about what trigger our unconscious behaviour. It’s very important that these knowledge are passed to the teens, which reven more need to control their response to these triggers. A post from psychologytoday.com by Douglas Kenrick has the whole story . Here is the last part: Ovulation and Deep Rationality Earlier, I discussed another set of findings indicating that ovulation also altered women’s economic decisions – with ovulation inspiring more to spend more money on sexy clothing (see  When women are in heat, the economy warms up ).    Findings such as these are in line with what my colleagues and I call Deep Rationality – the view that economic decisions, although irrational on the surface, often reflect an underlying evolutionary logic. If you consider the fact that humans are mammals, and that we have all the same hormonal and pheromonal systems that other mammals have, the new findings may be unsurprising.    The more interesting...

Life cycle of sad and happy

Bilde
A post from .com by has the whole story . Here is a part: Along the same lines of the  happiness flowchart , this graphic by Moritz Resl shows a simplified  life cycle between happy and sad . Let's not forget though that sometimes doing stuff you like leads to sad, and more importantly, doing stuff you don't like can lead to happy. Have a nice weekend! [ Moritz Resl  via  swissmiss ]

Why focusing on a few products is hard

Thanks Horace. It reminds me stay put on our iFacturas. A post from asymco.com by Horace Dediu has the original story . Here it is with kind permissions: “Focus is about saying no.” This quote is perhaps apocryphal but it’s credited to Steve Jobs. It’s not a novel idea. Many companies chant this mantra but do they really understand what focus implies? Focus is the antithesis of portfolio theory.  Portfolio theory  is a great concept. Every pedestrian in New York City has experienced it. While the weather is fine, street vendors sell their regular wares, but when a rainstorm appears it seems everyone is selling umbrellas. The idea that you keep umbrellas in stock seems very prudent. It’s a hedge that people will need a different product under different circumstances. Maintaining a product portfolio is a way of selecting a collection of products that has collectively lower risk than any individual product. The formulation of this even earned its creators the Nobel priz...

Valentine's Day specials coming to the App Store

Update your partners iPhone silently with a new Valentine app! A post from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) by Mike Schramm has the whole story . Here is a part: Ah, Valentine's Day, when Spring is just around the corner, love is in the air, and ... iOS games are on sale for 99 cents? Apparently -- since the holiday is largely made up by gift card retailers anyway, a bunch of big iOS developers are putting their games on sale for just a buck over the weekend. If you've been waiting to pick up games by Electronic Arts  or  Gameloft , this coming weekend will be your chance. ... Some games are also updating for Valentine's Day --  both Angry Birds  and  Cut the Rope  have updates planned or shipping already, and we'll probably see a few more of those as well.  Flower Garden  is also going free starting Thursday for the holiday. Just be careful -- if your Valentine catches you playing any of this new content during your date next Monday, ...

Antipsychotics Shrink the Brain #psychology #health #brain

Bilde
There has been voices calling taking of antipsychotics for chemical lobotomy. Horror, it seems they where right! A post from Psycology today by Robert Whitaker has the whole story . Here is a part: In 1991, Nancy Andreasen began a long-running study of first-episode schizophrenia patients, which involved periodically measuring their brain volumes with magnetic resonance scans. In articles published in 2003 and 2005, she reported finding "progressive brain volume reductions" in her patients, and that this shrinkage was associated with a worsening of negative symptoms, functional impairment and cognitive decline. But the implication was that this shrinkage was due to the disease, and that the drugs simply failed to stop it. "The medications currently used cannot modify an injurious process occurring in the brain, which is the underlying basis of symptoms," Andreasen wrote in her 2003 paper. However, even as she was publishing those findings, other research--in...

Men’s Guide to Crossing the Valentine’s Day Minefield #love

Bilde
Like me, you should prepare yourself. Read the whole article after seeing this abstract! A post from Psycology today by Guy Winch, Ph.D. has the whole story . Here is a part: Here are five simple guidelines for men to keep in mind when planning their Valentine's Day. Following these tips will help them cross the minefield unscathed and make the night one to remember for all the right reasons: 1.  Keep it Romantic:  Many men play it safe by planning the evening around their wife or girlfriend's favorite restaurant or entertainment venue. Unless the places or activities in question are truly romantic choices, planning your Valentine's Day around them is a big mistake. She might love karaoke but that doesn't mean she wants to spend Valentine's Day listening to intoxicated strangers butcher power ballads. 2.  Show thoughtfulness in the gift . The most important aspect of a Valentine's Day gift is how much thought you put into it. For many wo...

Putting Children to Bed: A Win-Win Proposition #insomnia

Bilde
Credit: Peter Paul Rubens - Two sleeping children (1612-113) We had a tough time to learn our children to sleep. Very tough. I wish we did know what's below. A post from Psycology today by Kevin D. Arnold, Ph.D., ABPP has the whole story . Here is a part: Four Tips to Help Children Stay in Bed   1.  Don't give negative attention :   Parents can become as lost as their children in the tussle over going to sleep. When we lecture or raise our voice ("I said, 'GO TO BED!'"), we might unintentionally reward our children with negative attention. I myself, even as a psychologist, must tap into my "wise" mind and remember the rule "All attention is attention." Children thrive on attention, so when parents pay negative attention to getting out of bed, they can accidently teach their children to keep getting up.   2.  Separate your child from the behaviors : Sometimes my frustration gets the best of me, and I only see my children misbeh...

Tick, tock, tick - Hugs and life in 3 second intervals

Bilde
And an icebear hug. Have you timed this? Have you timed you hugs. I've not. As in stock brokerage - timing is everything. You should definetly read this, and also rest of the post. A post from Psycology today by Adi Jaffe, Ph.D. has the whole story . Here is a part: Have you ever timed your hugs? Your kisses? How about the lengths of your inhales and exhales?   Would you be surprised if I told you they're all about as long? How about if I told you that most other animals seem to experience life using roughly the same time window we're apparently looking through? A moment = about 3 seconds Our 3 second window into life seems to influence not only specific behaviors or activities but rather the entire way in which we perceive our world. A recent study published in the Journal of Ethology examined the duration of hugs given and received by Olympic athletes in the recent 2008 Olympic Games. The sample was pretty comprehensive including 89 men and 96 women, athlete-at...

Her leder i Næringslivets hovedorganisasjon, John G. Bernander. Foto: Tore Kristiansen ...

Meditation 'Changes Brain Structure' In 8 weeks

Bilde
A post from Gawker by Adrian Chen has the whole story . Here is a part: [Image via shutterstock; via Boing Boing] A new study by  Massachusetts General Hospital  shows that structural changes in the brain are observable through MRI after just 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation—including increased grey matter in the part of the brain associated with learning. I've never tried meditation because so far I haven't found a good iPhone app for it. But this might change  everything : Scientists took MRI images before enrolling participants in an 8 week "mindfulness-based stress reduction program." Pre-meditation, they had brains that were normally addled from our modern technologies and plastic wraps. But then after 8 weeks in the course—which consisted of around a half-hour daily of "mindfulness exercises"—here's what they found. From  the press release : The analysis of MR images, which focused on areas where meditation-associated differences were seen ...

"Respect" as the Criminal Demands It versus Respect in the Responsible World

Bilde
A good observation and discussion on "respect". It reminds me somehow of angry Islam protesters demanding respect for their religion while burning our flag... A post from Psycology today by Stanton E. Samenow, Ph.D. has the whole story . Here is a part: "Respect" as the Criminal Demands It versus Respect in the Responsible World Verbal abuse, bullying, brutal assaults and even homicides occur when a criminal thinks he has been "disrespected." Let's look at what this street term means.  The individual with a criminal personality demands that others see him as the hub of the wheel, the center of the universe, around which all else revolves.   If others do not confirm this image that he has of himself as a powerful, controlling collosus, the criminal becomes instantly offended.   It does not take much for him to perceive that he has been  "disrespected." People with a criminal personality are constantly angry at a world that does not offer...
