Oh my… Once again I’m browsing wordpress.org and wordpress.com and a lot of theme vendors sites. The whole started with a brilliant article on Smashing Magazine on Wordpress trends for 2012.

The following is important to me:
  • Mobile-first is so prevalent to day, that I’ve been looking at “mobile only” options. Huge web sites like Google, Yahoo and Facebook are all noticing lower income from web, and a huge spike in mobile usage, which they don’t know how to monetize. Mobile-only is apps for iOS and Android
  • Responsive design is the solution to “Mobile first”.
  • HTML5 + CSS. This is the building brick in the new Hypernet of Robert McNamee, and according to him, lifesaving for content providers.
  • Portfolio for photos. My both local blogs have photographers in the team, and it’s important to present them properly.
  • Speed - the blog must run fast. There ain’t any worse than mobile websites that open slow!

Themes

The article above pointed me to some interesting themes:

  1. iFeature Pro: iFeature Pro 4 is a Responsive Drag & Drop Premium WordPress Theme. It includes a Responsive mobile ready Apple-like design (which magically adjusts to mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices), Responsive iFeature Slider, New Drag & Drop Header Elements, Page and Blog Elements, intuitive Theme Options, and is built with HTML5 and CSS3. iFeature Pro 4 is an all-in-one WordPress Theme that can be used to create a wide range of websites including but not limited to business websites, blogs, portfolios, landing pages, and more.
  2. Reverie: Reverie Framework is an extremely versatile HTML5 WordPress framework based on ZURB’s Foundation, a powerful tool for building prototypes on any kind of devices. Reverie follows HTML5 Boilerplate standard and is hNews micro-format ready. It is optimized for Search Engine while at the same time improve readability.
  3. Scherzo: Scherzo is a clean, readable theme that boasts a mobile first design, which means it displays perfectly on all mobile phones as well as desktop monitors. It requires version 3 or higher of WordPress and makes use of HTML5 structural tags, the hatom microformat and ARIA landmark roles. In plain language that means search engines will be able to interpret your content easily while screen readers will be able to navigate it with no problems.
  4. Portfolio: Portfolio is a refined and responsive theme for designers, filmmakers, photographers, and creative professionals. This theme allows you to effortlessly build, update and manage your online portfolio.
  5. High Art are used by http://steinerskolen.no, and are very beautiful, even has events! But sadly it isn’t responsive, and cannot be used on mobile.

Hosting

Somehow I’ve come to trust WP Egine. I’ve heard a lot on how hopeless and slow Godaddy is for Wordpress, and a lot on how great WP Engine is. And their site is quite compelling.

I’ve had a lot of help from Smashing Magazine, and one article that could help me taking control over my 3200 posts is WordPress Essentials: Interacting With The WordPress Database. For instance the tags are a mess; there are way too many and there are duplicates everywhere.

I’m open for advice!
