UX vs. GUI: The Touch-Mobile Cloud vs. PC/GUI/CS/WEB all out war (3)

This is the third post in my series: «8 reasons why PCs, servers, applications, search and web have peeked, whilst the mobile, the cloud, social media ant apps are surging ahead.» Today I'm dealing with the change from GUI to UX.
The GUI use the desktop metaphor, imitating the office workers desktop with documents, mapper in order to hide the complexity of the operating systems.
Apple commercialized the GUI with their Lisa and Macintosh computers. Apple learned from Xerox Park, which created the first GUI experimentally. Microsoft followed suit with their WIndows 1.0, which I personally ran on the IBM XT. It was sooo slow.

The UX on the other hand has abandoned the desktop altogether with context. UX devices normally have access to range of sensors, helping the user to establish context. The context can be geographical, time, light condition, direction, orientation and temperature to name a few. Based on this context UX apps will present the user for as few choices as possible, represented as button well suited to be touched. The UX tries to use large and more instructive icons, and shorter messages with nice and large layout. The objective of the UX is to provide the user with a good and simple experience.

I’ve many times described DOS as a research tool, Windows as an office worker tool and Web applications as tools for students. UX however, is really the tool for the rest of us: children and elderly, but foremost, a way better mean to get things done for everyone. Without bothering your mind with file and folders, and the complexity of the GUI desktop. Using the finger to do short sequences of concrete tasks.

Again, Apple made the first commercialization of the UX on their iPhone. They have extended it to the iPad, which are currently pressing the net-books out of market.

Predicates in Core Data

Database programming is all about filtering and sorting tables linked to each other. According to the book Core Data , «Core Data is Apple’s object graph management and persistency framework for iOS, OS X, watchOS, and tvOS.» In a sense, predicates are an object version of the WHERE clause in SQL. Just like NSFetchRequest represent the FROM clause in SQL. I never have had problems with WHERE and FROM in SQL, but the predicate format strings in Core Data has been quite a struggle for me. I don’t think the struggle is only my fault. Predicates should clearly be thought, at least to me, as a method of writing WHERE clauses. Hva er den egentlige forskjellen på høstens nettbrett?

Google selger allerede et godt 7’ nettbrett, Nexus, og Microsoft og Amazon har annonsert sine nye som kommer i oktober/november. Rykter vil ha det til at Apple kommer med en iPad Mini i oktober. Alle nettbrettene synes å være utmerkede mht spesifikasjoner og pris. Og brukerne står ovenfor en vanskelig oppgave når de skal velge. Horace Dediu i Asymco satte meg på sporet i å se hvilken jobb nettbrettene skal gjøre for oss. Jeg har valgt å se markedet som fire mobile plattformer, eller «Eco-systemer», som de også kalles.
