How long before apps overtake physical video game content sales?

I just commented to the blogpost  Why Windows Phone 7 Needs a Gaming Device  on GigaOM: I’m a bit surprised about you diminishing WP7 as a gaming device. As you surely knows, iOS is now a hugely popular gaming platform. And I don’t see any need for a mobile console. In my mind it will only be a little niche, rapidly dying out… Dediu is making a much better case below. A post from asymco.com by Horace Dediu has the original story . Here it is with his kind permission: After reviewing the  payments to suppliers , we can look at the store’s revenue generation rate. With the same assumptions, we have the following chart: We will have to wait for another report to see whether the recent burst of volume from apps is sustained[1], but the trend shows income from apps narrowing the gap to music.  In the last few months apps may have been generating $300 million/month[2]. The blue line above can be interpreted as an arrow aimed at the music industry. We know how that tu...

10 glimrende iPad-spill #game

Bilde
Flight Control HD.

Visiting the mobile country - Finland

Bilde
Finnish Sauna I'm on the road, flying Norwegian, to visit Finnish partners - existing and prospectives. In EVS in Düsseldorf I met with Nokia investment arm, and will take this a bit further. Also I will start implementing a deal to get iFacturas translated to Finnish and meet with Antti Hannula. The one thing I'm looking most forward to do is meeting with Horace Dediu. He's one of my three favorite mobile tech writers, and he is the most analythic of us all. I will also try to meet some angry birds and green pigs. I'm not kidding; Rovio, the makers of the game Angry Birds, are located in Finland. Hopefully they also are in the capital! Then hopefully I will see some of our competitors from innovate!100. It's ten years since I visited Helsinki. I really look forward too see our Scandinavian brothers!

How I kicked my addiction to the iPhone game Angry Birds

Bilde
Angry Bird is addictive. It's dangerous fun. A post from Psycology today by Michael Chorost, Ph.D. has the whole story . Here is a part: After weeks of struggle, I've finally deleted Angry Birds from my iPhone. It is a fiendishly addictive game. The premise is simple: you "pull" back on a slingshot to fire a scowling bird at a structure with green pigs in it. The better your aim, the more damage you do and the more green pigs you kill. I've played a number of iPhone games, but this one was a masterpiece of addictiveness. Here's why. 1.  It's simple . Absurdly simple. You pull back on a slingshot and fire. Sometimes you tap on the screen to make a bird in flight do something, like drop a bomb. And that's it. There's no learning curve. You're playing in ten seconds.  2.  It's rewarding . When the bird hits the structure, things break. Glass tinkles. Wood splinters. Stone shatters. Pigs explode. It brought out the ten-year old boy in m...

Bilde
I really don't mind neither PlayStation 3 nor PSP. But I mind Angry Birds. And I'm going to visit their country. 2010 Best casual mobile gaming

Bilde
Grimm's Rapunzel - 3D Interactive Pop-up Book I, and my old friends, are astonished by the fact that I play games at all. It’s a quite new interest for me. The whole started with FarmVille , whitch was way fun to play with my neviews, until everything became just too much. All my crops rottened, it wasn’t any fun at all, and after a lot of struggling with my conscience I finally quite. And I am quite determined to not touch something from Zynga again. My 2010 favourite game has been Angry Birds . I didn’t really know that I had so much antipathy and violent feelings towards Green Pigs. (Sorry pigs, don’t take it personally!) Rovio, the Finnish producers of the Birds, also are quite profident in both how to drive interest and earn money. I wish they continue with their luck in 2011. The game that Embla, my smallest niece, and I have passed most time with is: Alice in Wonderland is the one game Embla always want to work with. Each time she visit me she pass a hurdle. D...

Unicorn Disco is silly and stupid but lot of fun! Update!

Bilde
Update: I've still stuck with this still photo until I'm back in Spain to shoot a new Unicorn Disco video sequence with my co-workers. Just hours ago Unicorn Disco added video to their wildly popular and funny app. We are going to have lot of fun in my company with this app! Seeing my collegues Toni and Reva dancing to my own Beatles and Bach recording in iTunes made me laugh , too loud for being in an airplane and many times. Changing costumes and music and moving Toni and Reva around was simply irresistible fun. Mark Sigal is into this game . I know him as an excellent and serious tech writer , from whom I've learned a lot, he must be quite multitalented... Can it be better? Here is a couple of suggestions: Let's be able to move a dancer to the foreground.  Let's create a video from it or send it to other users.  The UI can give us more hints an actions.  But well done! Now home to my grandchildren to some real Unicorn Disco fun!

Electronic Art's App Store price war

Bilde
Electronic art gives you their games for a buck. Even if they had cost as much as $13. Run and buy! A post from .com by has the whole story . Here is a part: As we previously reported , EA dropped prices on most of its iOS apps this week, and that sale sent shockwaves through the App Store's holiday season. We've seen tons of awesome new apps hit the store in the past few weeks, but if you look at the Top Paid apps right now, most of them are older EA favorites. EA currently has  six of the top 10 apps on the store  (with  Battlefield: Bad Company 2  leading the way -- a big name title released for just 99 cents), and it's peppered throughout the rest of the top 50 as well. The biggest recent release on the list is probably  Infinity Blade , which, despite extremely solid reviews and lots of press about its release, is currently down at number 16.

The Angry Birds Finally Get Some Help #humor

Bilde
When I show Angry Birds to friends, they sometimes responds a bit curious. Like thinking that I have some problems with green pigs, and really are showing some agression under all my politeness. I don't know, but a psycholog may be something, at least for the birds... A post from mashable.com by has the whole story .

Fed Up With Android Market, Angry Birds Flies to Carrier Billing and Use the hated Pig as logo

Bilde
After dealing with the 39 different Android screens, it shouldn't surprise anyone. Using a green pig as logo for their payment system either. The birds are really fed up on pigs. A post from from GigaOM by Ryan Kim has the whole story . Here is a part: Rovio is taking its  success with mobile game Angry Birds  — 50 million downloads and counting — and using it to launch a new in-app purchase, carrier-billing payment system. The mobile developer said it’s launching Bad Piggy Bank early next year with Finnish carrier Elisa, allowing users to upgrade to an ad-free version of Angry Birds or buy Angry Birds’ first virtual good  – the Mighty Eagle character — with one tap. During a press event, Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka said the studio will offer its system to other developers and will take a share of the revenue. He said he hopes it will provide consumers, especially in areas with less credit card penetration, an option for buying in-app content without having to...

Christmas Angry Birds brings inevitable addiction to the App Store

Bilde
Credit MTV3.fi I'm a big fan of the Danish Angry Birds. Somehow it trigs me a lot. So seing an Angry Bird with a St. Claus costume trigs my writing obsession.  A post from from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) by Dave Caolo has the whole story . Here is a part: You had to see this coming. Rovio is reportedly prepping a Christmas-themed update to the ridiculously popular Angry Birds game for iOS. Finnish TV site MTV3  has the scoop  ( English translation ) with a screenshot showing snow-bound pigs about to receive the wrath of flying snowballs.

Cracking the Mainstream: Why Social Gaming Is More Than Just a Fad

Bilde
Take a look at the graphic. It tells that social gaming is affecting almost everyone on internet. The old way of subscription gaming is only a 20th. in size. This trend is favorizing iOS more than any other. A post at mashable.com has the whole story. Here is a part: Since taking off in 2009, the social gaming phenomenon has drawn hundreds of millions of players, but it has also found more than its fair share of critics. Many claim that social games are too shallow and simplistic to attract a sustainable audience, while others assert that a free-to-play business model leaves too much money on the table to support the development of social games that compare favorably to traditional games. Some believe that the biggest threat to social games is the force that gave life to them in the first place -- the fate of the industry seems inextricably linked to the ebb and flow of the  Facebook  platform, and Facebook’s wavering commitment to developers does little to inspire confi...
